YORK — Wahoo native Lauren Thiele has advanced to the semifinals of the 56th Nebraska Girls’ Match Play Championship at the York Country Club.

Thiele, the fourth seed, opened play in the Round of 16 with a 3 and 1 win over 13th-seeded Emily Krzyzanowski of Scottsbluff.

In the quarterfinals, Thiele downed fifth-seeded Izzi Puk of Omaha 5 and 3.

Puk had advanced with a victory in 19 holes over Karsen Morrison of North Platte.

Thiele will now face top-seeded Megan Whittaker of Elkhorn in the semifinals Wednesday morning.

Whittaker defeated 2017 Girls’ Amateur champion Ricki Hickstein of Chadron in 20 holes to earn the matchup with Thiele. Whittaker opened the day with a 2-up win over Peyton Savington of Papillion.

The other semifinal will feature Lincoln’s Kate Strickland against Kendra Placke of Seward.

Strickland, seeded seventh, beat 10th-seeded Cassidy Ulrich of Hartington 6 and 4. She then downed second-seeded Nicole Kolbas of Lincoln 2 and 1.

Placke, seeded third, won 1-up over Jalea Culliver of Omaha. She then defeated Brynn Sundquist of Lincoln 3 and 2.

The championship match is scheduled for about 1:20 p.m.

Eight boys remain in the 29th Junior Match Play Championship.

Top-seeded Alex Zillig of La Vista needed just 27 holes to get through his first two matches. He’ll face Rex Souilliere of Omaha in the quarterfinals.

Caleb Badura of Aurora will face Graham Southwick of Beatrice in another match.

The other two matches feature Dalton Mogul of York against Rourke Jensen of Lincoln and Reed Malleck of York against Omaha native Ryan Rogers.
