OMAHA — Fremont High School qualified six wrestlers for the state tournament during A-4 district tournament competition Saturday.

Cody Carlson (132 pounds), Hunter Robertson (138) and Omar Garibo (182) all earned second-place finishes. Cody Fielder was third at 120 while Mason Reiger (145) and Jesus DeLuna (220) were fourth during the event at Millard West.

Fremont coach Ben Wilcox said the Tigers competed hard against a talented field.

“Going into this tournament, we understood that we were in a tough district, but we strongly felt that we would qualify at least seven wrestlers,” he said. “Unfortunately, we found out first hand why the consolation semifinals are called the heartbreak round. Even though we suffered some heartbreaking defeats in the wrestle backs, I’m proud of how our guys battled to the very end.”

Carlson pinned Bennett Janecek of Creighton Prep (2:26) and Jayden Schriner of Lincoln Pius (2:35) before dropping a 5-1 decision to second-ranked Jack Hufffman of Millard West.

Robertson also won his first two matches. He won by fall in 1:08 against Mohamed Siidow of South Sioux City (1:08) and Sam Maloley of Prep (1:29). Third-ranked Adam Kinnaman of Lincoln East then prevailed by a 19-4 technical fall in the finals.

Garibo pinned John Bullock of Prep in 2:33 and Tristan Welborn of Millard North in 1:44. Second-ranked Andrew Muthersbaugh of East beat Garibo by an 11-3 major decision in the title match.

Fielder opened with a 16-1 technical fall over Axel Hernandez of South Sioux City. He then lost 9-2 to fifth-ranked Camden Russell of Millard West in the semifinals. Fielder rebounded with a 13-1 major decision over Cody Douglass of Millard North and then beat Ryan Mazour of Pius by an 18-5 major decision in the third-place match.

Reiger went 2-2 on the day with his two losses coming to ranked opponents, including to No. 2 Nonniel Wells of Omaha North and fourth-ranked Levi May of Millard West.

DeLuna narrowly lost out on third place as Chris Karmzasin of East beat him 2-0.

“The good thing is that for the 14 Tigers who wrestled in the district tournament, 11 of them will be back next season and the hurt they feel from not qualifying for state will motivate them to get better during the offseason,” Wilcox said. “As for the six that did qualify, it wasn’t easy. We were up against some of the best wrestlers in the state, especially at 120, 132 and 145, but the good thing about having some of the state’s best wrestlers in one district means that they will be on the opposite side of the bracket at state.”

East won the district title with 257 points while Millard West was second with 133. Pius was third at 109. The Tigers finished fifth with 98.5.

Wilcox said the Tigers will be ready for state, which starts Thursday at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha.

“We are not going to concern ourselves with bracket draws, opponent records or what someone did at state last year,” he said. “We are going to concern ourselves with wrestling to our best ability in every match and battling our opponents with intense maximum effort.”
