Two horses have died the past two days following injuries at Churchill Downs. They are the 11th and 12th fatalities over the past month at the home of the Kentucky Derby. Mare Kimberley Dream was euthanized after sustaining a distal sesamodean ligament rupture to her front leg during Saturday's first race. Lost in Limbo was euthanized following a similar injury just before the finish line in Friday's seventh race. A Kentucky steward's report from May 13 lists the previously unreported death of Bosque Redondo after finishing 10th in the seventh race from an unspecified injury.
NASCAR drivers have long considered the Coca-Cola 600 the most grueling race on the schedule. It's expected to be even more challenging Sunday for Alex Bowman, who'll be racing for the first time since fracturing his vertebra last month at a sprint car race in Hendrick Motorsports' teammate Kyle Larson's new racing series in West Burlington, Iowa. Bowman said even twisting the wrong way can be painful. Bowman missed three Cup points races while sidelined, leaving him five points out of the 16th and final playoff qualifying position with 13 races remaining in the regular season. Cup points leader William Byron will start on the pole for Sunday's race after qualifying was rained out.
Alex Palou is the pole sitter and IndyCar points leader headed into the Indianapolis 500. The Spaniard is performing at a high level despite his rocky future. He is headed to McLaren Racing next season but currently is a Chip Ganassi Racing driver, so he's trying to balance the obligations of two teams. He's the favorite to win Sunday. Palou has the steely resolve to be able to shut out all the noise and win the race.

Defending Formula One champion Max Verstappen produced a superb final lap to take pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix and deny Aston Martin veteran Fernando Alonso his first pole in 11 years. Verstappen called his first pole at Monaco "very lovely" but there was nothing to cheer for his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez as last year's Monaco winner crashed early in qualifying.
Johnny Rutherford and Gordon Johncock will always be linked to the 1973 Indianapolis 500. Rutherford made the first of his three pole-winning runs that year. Johncock captured the first of his two Indy wins. What they remember most from that tragic month is how it was a catalyst for safety improvements across all forms of racing. Two drivers and a pit crew member died that month. Since then, steps to boost safety have been seen from the car to the track itself.
Katherine Legge remembers her days as a youngster driving go-karts and how at times she was ruthlessly bullied by the boys. Or the trouble she had growing up in racing and in securing sponsorship and support. There are many reasons why Legge is the only female driver starting in this year's Indianapolis 500. The women's movement that once promised to bring many more into racing appears to have stalled. There have still been just nine women to start the race in more than 100 years.
